Wordy Qwerty
Wordy Qwerty is an online reading and spelling program for grades 2-3. It is the follow up to Read, Write and Type and helps students improve their spelling skills as they complete 20 lessons. Lessons include Silent E, Sounds of C, CK or K, Double Consonants, and I Before E. Six different activities are used in each lesson including Patterns, Karaoke, Recycler, Pop-a-Word, Write Stories, and Read Stories. In each Karaoke activity a song is sung for the spelling rule the child will be learning in that lesson. The child can then replay the song and sing along to the lyrics on the screen. During the Pop-a-Word game the student looks for certain words and pops a balloon when he finds each one. When the child gets to Write Stories he will be typing as the words are dictated. And in Read Stories he reads a story and fills in the missing words when he finds a blank space.

To use Wordy Qwerty your student logs in and chooses the lesson and activity he needs to complete from the home screen. An animated, talking computer keyboard and music keyboard are the instructors. The child has to complete six activities and a spelling quiz for each lesson. When the child completes a lesson he earns spheres. After every four lessons a new music machine is unlocked. Each machine is played by the spheres as they travel along a computer generated instrument. When the child completes the last lesson all five music machines are combined into one large music machine.
You can check your student's progress and manage your account by logging in to your teacher account. You can also find out how long you have left on your subscription and see a student report. The finished lessons are graded from 0-100%.
My children loved working on this program. My daughter, Sarah, a first grade student and my son, Elijah, a third grade student were my guinea pigs. Sarah is working on lesson 7 and Elijah has finished all of the lessons. They were very motivated by the music machines. My son would play each one over and over after he had unlocked it. The lessons were presented creatively with the different games and songs. The children became faster at typing with our computer keyboard and were able to complete the activities on their own, mostly without frustration.
I think the different activities in each lesson will appeal to students with different learning types. The activities build upon each other and cover each spelling rule thoroughly. The lessons hold the interest of my children and have helped them improve their spelling.
One caution: as I was looking through the student logs I noticed a bunch of 0%'s for my son. I think he may have found a way to cheat the program by rushing through each lesson in order to get his completed music machine. I plan to have him go back through each lesson slowly and make sure he is doing all of the work.
